Ongoing Development Initiatives: Creating Positive Change through Projects
After building up relationships and understanding through exchange visits, we are now working on practical projects of value to disabled people in both countries. Here are some of the projects that are currently underway:
Artistic Exchanges
Our artistic exchanges aim to facilitate collaborations between disabled artists from the UK and Cuba. Three pairs of artists are currently working together, sharing their experiences and creating collaborative work.
Supporting Learning Disabled People’s Employment
Working with the ACPDI and the Provincial Directorate of Work and Social Security, we are developing materials and Easy Read resources that will support the employment of people with learning disabilities. These materials will provide guidance and tools for employers to create inclusive work environments and support individuals with learning disabilities to thrive in their chosen careers.
Workshops for Mobility and Accessibility Equipment Repair
Ensuring access to mobility and accessibility equipment is crucial for disabled people, and accessing this equipment can be very challenging in Cuba. With ACLIFIM, we are piloting workshops that will train individuals on repairing and maintaining such equipment. By supporting individuals to take care of their own equipment, we aim to enhance their independence and improve their overall quality of life. Users and facilitators of the workshops will be sharing their skills and insights on with engineering students at De Montfort University.
Bid Development for Longitudinal Study
We are currently working on bid development for a longitudinal study on the development of the Cuban Association for People with Learning Disabilities. This study will provide valuable insights into the effectiveness and impact of the ACPDI over an extended period. We’re working on this with the collaboration of UK disabled people’s organizations Learning Disability England and Sparkle Sheffield.
Writing Partnerships for International Publication
We are establishing writing partnerships between academics in Cuba and the UK to support international publication. Through these partnerships, we aim to amplify our impact and ensure that excellent Cuban practice and scholarship can reach a wider audience.
Inclusive Parks
Masters candidate Mileidis Mengana Coba, supervised by Dr Diurkis Madrigal León, has worked with disability organisations, children and families to create a new methodology for disability inclusive children’s playgrounds. We hope to announce soon how this methodology is to be employed in Granma Province.
Stay tuned for updates on these projects and more.
